On-Page SEO Guide for Finnish Business Websites
SEO That Actually Moves Rankings in 2026
Most SEO advice online is either too generic ("create quality content") or too tactical ("use this exact meta length"). This is the working middle: what to do, in what order, for a Finnish business site.
The Hierarchy of SEO Impact
Not all SEO work has equal impact. Roughly:
- Keyword targeting at the URL/H1 level — biggest impact
- Page-level content depth and quality — large impact
- Internal linking structure — large impact, underrated
- Technical fundamentals (Core Web Vitals, schema, indexability) — medium impact
- Backlinks — medium impact, hardest to scale
- Meta description and title tag tuning — small ranking impact, big CTR impact
Spend your time top-down on this list, not bottom-up.
Keyword Targeting (Where Most Sites Fail)
Each page should target one primary keyword + 2–4 related ones. The primary keyword goes in:
- The URL slug
- The H1
- The first 100 words of body copy
- One H2
- The meta title (front-loaded)
- The image alt text of the main image
In Finnish, this means choosing between word forms: "verkkosivut yritykselle" vs "yrityksen verkkosivut" vs "kotisivut yritykselle". Pick the one with the highest search volume that matches user intent and commit. Don't try to rank one page for all three — split into pillar + cluster pages.
Content Depth Without Padding
Long content ranks better — when it's actually thorough. 500-word pages rarely rank for competitive terms. Aim for:
- Pillar pages: 1,500–2,500 words
- Service pages: 600–1,200 words
- Blog posts: 800–1,500 words
But don't pad to hit word count. Cover the topic completely: what it is, who it's for, how it works, what it costs, common mistakes, FAQ. If you'd say it in a sales call, it belongs on the page.
Internal Linking (The Underrated Move)
Every new page should be linked from 3–5 existing relevant pages, using descriptive anchor text. Most sites have an orphaned homepage linking to service pages once each — that wastes the SEO authority you have.
Build a hub-and-spoke structure:
- Pillar page links to all cluster pages
- Each cluster page links back to the pillar
- Related cluster pages cross-link
Technical Must-Haves
- Core Web Vitals all green: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1
- Schema markup: Organization (sitewide), LocalBusiness (contact page), Service (each service page), FAQPage (any page with FAQs), Article (blog posts), BreadcrumbList (sitewide)
- Indexable: no noindex on pages you want to rank, robots.txt not blocking key folders
- Crawlable: XML sitemap submitted, no infinite scroll without pagination fallback
- Mobile-friendly: passes Google's mobile-friendly test
- HTTPS everywhere: no mixed content warnings
Finnish-Specific SEO
- Hreflang tags if you have FI and EN versions (`hreflang="fi-FI"`, `hreflang="en"`)
- Don't translate keyword-by-keyword. "verkkosivut" and "kotisivut" both mean website but have different search patterns and intent — write each in its native context
- City pages for local search: Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Turku, Oulu — but only if you serve those areas
- Y-tunnus and address in schema markup for LocalBusiness signals
- Google My Business with Finnish posts and reviews — major local ranking factor
Meta Tags That Earn Clicks
The title and meta description don't directly rank you, but they decide whether searchers click. For each page:
- Title: keyword | benefit | brand. Under 60 chars. "Verkkosivut yritykselle | Alkaen €950 | Bluefour"
- Meta description: include keyword, include price or benefit, include CTA. Under 155 chars.
- Don't use the same title or description on multiple pages
Track These 5 Metrics Monthly
- Search Console impressions per primary keyword
- Average position for tracked keywords
- Click-through rate per page
- Indexed page count vs intended
- Core Web Vitals pass rate
That's it. SEO is unglamorous, incremental, and works on a 3–9 month timeline. Skip the silver-bullet advice; do these basics on every page; outrank competitors who didn't.
